Have you ever been at the movie theatre or sitting at home watching television and thought to yourself, "I wonder who styles that actress' hair?"
Or perhaps you've always wanted to have a brand new hair-do styled by one of those posh, Hollywood stylists to the stars? Well, here's your chance to bid on a similar experience.
It turns out that, in real life too, Kristin's been emulating the persona of the character that made her famous. She's been supporting Oxfam since the 2004 South East Asian tsunami. More recently, she's also devoted her attention to the efforts of women's groups and community-based organizations whose work focuses on the response to the HIV epidemic.

Alright everybody, "Git-R-Done"! That's the famous saying from Larry the Cable Guy. You probably know him as one of three comedians that make up the Blue Collar Comedy team, along with Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall.
You're probably wondering what it is you're supposed to "Git-Done," right?
Well, that would be checking out and perhaps bidding on Larry The Cable Guy's auctions for charity. First, is two VIP tickets to one of his famously sold-out comedy shows, complete with a special meet-and-greet with Mr. Cable Guy himself. But the BIG prize here is his beloved 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 Sport Truck, which Larry the Cable Guy has personally signed himself. The auctions started on Monday, Feb. 11 and the truck is up to $20,100 and the VIP tickets to his show are going for $2,250.
Listed using eBay's Giving Works feature, 100% of the proceeds of both auctions go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Look for the blue and gold ribbon icons used to distinguish any item listed for a non-profit through Charity Giving Works.
So now you know. So, go on, "Git-R-Done" as these two fantastic auctions end tomorrow to help out a very worthy cause.
For all the fans of the eBay Traveling Lab Coat (TLC), you'll be happy to learn that latest version has been listed for auction.
This time the (TLC) is back new and improved complete with it's own successful Heart "transplant." Embroidered inside the jacket, at the top, near the collar, the new Heart provides the lucky owner wearing the (TLC) that warmth and protection often found among those with a good Heart.
The current high bid is $200.00, but luckily 3 days remain in the auction to allow for the eBay Community to display how generous it's Heart is by paying it forward once again with the great Traveling Lab Coat (TLC) auctions. This should be exciting!
Maybe the stars in Hollywood don't have as many red carpet awards shows this year, but the latest promotion from eBay brings the red carpet to you. On February 4th, eBay launched the"And the Winner Is...YOU!" promotion, which runs through February 29th. (Yes, it is a leap year!) There are daily instant winners of eBay Gift Certificates, and each entry also puts you in the running for one of the Grand Prizes which include a VIP trip to 2009 Grammy® Awards, a VIP trip to the 2008 Indy 500® , or $10,000 to spend on eBay.
And if you're hungry for your fix of celebrities, we have some of those too! A number of A-listers will be a part of the eBay red carpet experience, with some one-of-a-kind items and experiences up for auction through eBay Giving Works. The best part is all of the proceeds will benefit non-profit organizations. Shakira has a number of auctions currently running, and Tom Hanks recently completed some radio auctions which raised over $13,000 for the Freeplay Foundation. More auctions will be added throughout the month from Larry the Cable Guy, Scarlett, Johansson, Kristin Davis and more.
I think I hear the crescendo of music telling me my time on this stage is complete. Be sure to check the Shop Victoriously site throughout the month to enter the instant win game and sweepstakes and to see the latest celebrity auctions. Here is the Awards Show TV commercial:
I'm not a huge reality show junkie (except for that darn Survivor addiction that I always say I'm going to shake and then never do), but I consider The Amazing Race to be must-see TV. If you've never tuned in, here's how it works. Teams of two people, each with a relationship that can vary from "Sisters" to "Newly Dating" to "Grandfather/Grandson," are racing around the world, completing tasks to earn clues that tell them where to go next. Each episode covers a leg of the race, and the last team to cross the finish line each show is eliminated. Once they're down to the final 3 teams, it's an all-out mad dash to finish first overall and claim the million dollar grand prize.
I love it because the contestants get to visit (and do activities in) a variety of locales all around the world. In fact, I've even applied for the show - the fact that we didn't even make it to the "rejection form letter" stage tells you all you need to know about how interesting our video was.
Anyway, as I perused the CBS site looking for details about next season, I saw a note that father/daughter team Ronald and Christina, the second-place finishers from the previous race, were auctioning off the shirts they'd worn during the race on eBay (including his famous "Who's Your Daddy" shirt). Theirs was a cool story. He's a self-described workaholic dad that wasn't around much while Christina was growing up, and they hoped the race would bring them closer together. After some rough moments early on, Ronald learrned to put away his critical side and started treating his daughter as an equal. After that, they cruised to the finals, and were just edged out for the big prize at the end.
But the reason why they're auctioning off the shirts is even cooler. During the show they spent two legs in Burkina Faso, one of the poorer nations in the world. There they were struck by the living conditions, and the fact that most children don't have access to even basic education. They decided to do something about it, and are auctioning the shirts off through eBay Giving Works to benefit Sheltering Wings, an orphanage in the town of Yako that provides shelter and care to children who have lost their parents and have no access to primary education. Check out all the details, and the shirts, on the About Me page they put together.
If you haven't visited the Shop Victoriously site lately, take a look around! The site has been updated and the red carpet rolled out for some great celebrities and their auctions to benefit various non-profits.
Tom Hanks has kicked things off with some unique Lifeline radios up for auction. Not only has he
autographed the radios, but the winner will also receive a personal letter and signed photo from him as well! Lifeline radios can be powered either by solar or by wind-up, and they provide crucial lines of communication in many parts of Africa where electricity is non-existent. These radios provide education, health advice, life skills and news to children, farmers, and the general population. Check out the video (starring, of course, Mr. Hanks) which really demonstrates the power of these radios.
He's listed 10 of these autographed radios through eBay Giving Works, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Freeplay Foundation. The Freeplay Foundation's mission is to provide sustainable access to information and education to the poorest of the poor.
While on the Shop Victoriously site, you might also see another exciting promotion coming in early February for your chance to win cool prizes as we continue to roll out the red carpet. In addition, other unique celebrity auctions will be added soon from Shakira, Counting Crows, Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Davis, Colin Firth, and more! Check the Shop Victoriously site regularly for updates.
Breaker One-Nine! Breaker One-Nine! This is "Brian D. Chatter-Blogger" here bringing you an update on the ongoing journey of the Traveling Lab Coat. It's been listed again by the previous winner, ebwizcom.
The TLC, (as it has been nicknamed by ebwizcom), just might be in the most interesting part of its journey so far on this 5th leg of on going grassroots effort by eBay Community members to raise money for various favorite non-profit organizations.
What makes this fifth edition of the TLC interesting? As ebwizcom puts it, "I thought it would be fun (to) put some real MILES on this thing and put the 'travel' in the traveling lab coat!" Convenient for the TLC that its current owner is one of our nation's dedicated truckers, responsible for hauling goods across the country. And boy, have they seen some interesting things, like when ebwizcom's big rig the TLC was riding in hit a buzzard. But the TLC and ebwizcom survived, thankfully.
With the 4,587 miles traveled, the TLC has been on a whirlwind tour through 11 states. It sure resembles the campaign tour of a Presidential candidate. It's not too late to get the TLC on the ballots, is it? "TLC in 2008" has a nice ring to it, eh?
But I digress. If you'd like to read about the entire journey the TLC and ebwizcom took together, be sure to check out ebwizcom's TLC Journal. Don't miss the TLC Map where you can follow the route the TLC traveled.
Finally, let's not forget the auction for the TLC ends on January 14, 2008. Don't miss out on the Free Shipping offer. Perhaps most importantly, the winner is helping to raise funds for the St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Currently the highest bid is $251.00. It should be exciting to see how this stage of the TLC's fascinating journey turn's out.
Every year, my new year's resolutions seem to run out of steam by the end of January. That's about when my resolve to hit the gym more often that year finally crumbles, and a week later my waistline is back where it used to be the previous year. So it was in 2007 (2008 will be different!)
However, one resolution that I did largely live up to in 2007 was my promise to lead a more environmentally friendly, sustainable and "greener" lifestyle. I contributed to fewer greenhouse gas emissions by taking public transportation as often as possible. I installed energy efficient light bulbs in my house. I tried to buy locally-grown produce. I religiously recycled my trash. I had turned into a tree-hugger. Or so I thought.
At the end of last year I felt a virtuous glow that I had significantly reduced my carbon footprint. But had I really? How could I know for sure? Talking to Libby Reder from eBay's Global Citizenship program I learned that I didn't have to go further than eBay to find a calculator that gives me a good estimate of my carbon footprint.
The Pop!Tech Carbon Initiative, hosted on eBay Giving Works, has a simple calculator that estimates the amount of carbon emissions you create by driving, flying, and powering your home. I punched in my numbers into the calculator and was dismayed to see that my lifestyle results in an estimated 18.9 tons of carbon a year! That's nearly double that of most people in the U.S. Evidently I haven't been doing enough to reduce my carbon footprint.
But Libby had more encouraging news. You can actually purchase carbon offsets through the Pop!Tech Carbon Initiative, hosted on eBay Giving Works, by supporting one of three inspiring projects that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in exact proportion to the ones you create:
One of the great things about all of these projects is that they have benefits on several different levels. Besides helping to encourage greener, cleaner living, all three projects also have social benefits, whether economic development in their local communities or public health improvement. Best of all, through these eBay Giving Works listings, 100% of the funds raised will be going directly to the project developers who are working to help both people and the planet.
At first I thought that offsetting my 18.9 tons of carbon would be phenomenally expensive, but it’s not. Offsets are sold by the ton, and the price of a ton of offsets for the 3 projects listed above ranges from $5.50 to $10.50. That means if I choose to offset ALL my 18.9 tons, I can do it for as low as $103.95 (if I choose to buy offsets in the Nicaragua project).
So far, the eBay Community has offset 1,838 tons of carbon – that's the same as getting 300 SUV drivers to switch to hybrid cars for a year!
Finally, Libby told me that it's always important to remember that when it comes to the environment; offsetting is just one piece of the puzzle. Once you understand your carbon footprint, the best thing you can do is take action to reduce it directly, by living smarter. She gave me a great site to find tips on how you can minimize your impact – Environmental Defense.
Remember that there's a $5000 prize up for grabs, so get out your cameras and shoot a 30-second or 1 minute video and write a 100-word essay describing "How eBay Giving Works helped you make a difference." Then send it to the eBay Giving Works team by 11:59:59 PM PT on December 21, 2007.
I trust everyone is super busy preparing for and enjoying this holiday season. If you don’t mind, I’d like to give you an opportunity to take a break from all the holiday hubbub, if you will, and read about the next stop along the journey to what is fast becoming known as the, eBay Live Traveling Lab Coat . For those of you who are not familiar with the escapades of this illustrious lab coat, I encourage you all to read about the earlier stops in our previous blog post.
In keeping with the “Traveling Lab Coat” tradition, previous auction winner, ebetsy, listed this item with eBay Giving Works and chose the AIDS Services of Dallas as the benefactor of 100% of the proceeds raised under ebetsy’s eBay Live Traveling Lab Coat auction. AIDS Services of Dallas is the largest provider of medically supportive housing in Texas for those in need living with HIV/AIDS.
Be sure to check out ebetsy’s fun and fanciful video of herself while she opened and tried on her stunning lab coat she won on eBay. Can you believe she managed all that while singing her rendition of Weird Al’s “eBay” song?
This notion of “paying it forward” is special and definitely exciting to watch as the eBay Live Traveling Lab Coat gains momentum with in the Community. If you want to jump on the momentum you should know the auction ends tomorrow with the current bid amount at $315.00 so if you’re going to bid, hurry up and place that bid now! Good Luck!
Greetings! You may recall my recent blog post about the 7th on Sale charity event, which was also spotlighted by eBay Giving Works. I decided to visit the 7th on Sale eBay Store to see how the event was progressing. I was quite excited to see some of the final prices that I came across and if they are any indication of success, then 7th on Sale 2007 should have no problem surpassing their goal of doubling the total from the 2005 event.
Since the movie The Devil Wears Prada is about the Fashion Industry, I thought there might be some common themes between the movie and 7th on Sale. I found this beautiful gown designed by Valentino and worn by actress Anne Hathaway to the 2007 Oscar movie awards. Although this elegant dress with white lace gown with black pleated bow and beaded detailing was valued at $15,500, the lucky winning buyer was able to snag it for $2,205. In addition, the best part is that every dollar of the sale benefits those living with and fighting HIV/AIDS.
Next, while browsing some other 7th on Sale 2007 items, I came across this tomato red, Tracy Reese cocktail dress, worn by Desperate Housewives actress, Eva Longoria. It attracted 64 bids, and after starting at $12 and ultimately sold for $227.50. This dress was also featured on NBC's The Today Show, where Constance White, eBay's Style Director, and one of the country's most respected fashion experts, profiled various celeb items available through 7th on Sale 2007.
Constance, who worked on the 7th on Sale Merchandising committee, and therefore has an insider's knowledge into the hottest 7th on Sale items, listed a bunch of holiday shopping picks on her eBay Blog, Fashion is My Life (a must-read for all you fashionistas). So don't fret if you're agonizing about what to give your always-fashion-conscious daughter, your goofy, lovable brother, or your sophisticated mother. Look no further than Constance's Holiday Shopping Made Easy list!
Oh! And one last bit of information. The 7th on Sale 2007 online event has been extended through December 10, so you have four more days to find that designer item you've had your eye on – at affordable prices. And you can give yourself a feeling of holiday cheer by knowing that your purchases will help a good cause – helping to fight HIV/AIDS.
Did you know that, since 2000, more than $118 million has been raised for charity from listings sold on eBay worldwide? But behind this amazing but impersonal number are thousands of untold stories -- stories of millions of our Community members and the people whose lives they helped make better, by listing through eBay Giving Works.
We want the world to know those stories. And to actually SEE and be inspired by the people who made a difference.
Through the Shoot. Share. Win! video contest, the eBay Giving Works team wants to celebrate the wonderful ways in which members have made a difference.
Share your stories with us and you could win $5,000! Just shoot a 30 second to 1 minute video and a 100-word essay describing "How eBay Giving Works helped you make a difference." Then send it to the eBay Giving Works team before December 21st (extended from the original date of December 5th!).
You'll find all the details on the Shoot Share Win contest rules page, so check them out. And in case you're daunted by the thought of playing Scorsese and shooting video, it's not really that complicated. Quite simple, really. These days most ordinary digital cameras have a video setting. You just have to switch to it and start shooting! (Here are a few samples and tips.)
As you can see in this video of Jen Ibarra from the eBay Giving Works team (which took us all of 10 minutes to organize), it might take a few takes, but it's fun to do!
I'm back with news about an extraordinarily exciting event called 7th on Sale. Started in 1990 by some of the famous and even some not-so-famous people in America's fashion world, 7th on Sale was created to feature designer-donated merchandise at dramatically prices. The funds raised from the sales of all 7th on Sale donated items were made available to community agencies set up to serve those affected with HIV/AIDS in New York City. That first year they raised a praise-worthy sum of $4.2 million.
The vision of these designers helped to form a non-profit organization called the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Foundation. Today, the (CFDA) Foundation, along with Vogue Magazine, and various other important names in the fashion industry, have extended the generosity gathered from the 7th on Sale events. Beneficiaries over the years have included dozens of worthy organizations, including AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA), Alpha Workshops, amfAR, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, God’s Love We Deliver, Greenhope Services for Women, Harlem United Community AIDS Center, HIV Law Project, and the Latino Commission on AIDS, among many, many others.
Co-Chairs of the 7th on Sale 2007 event, which include top designers like Kenneth Cole, Marc Jacobs, and Ralph Lauren along with model Kate Moss and women's clothing designer Diane Von Furstenberg, kicked off the begining of 7th on Sale 2007 by hosting a fabulous black-tie gala party. Held on the evening of November 15th at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City, they were joined by many other celebrities and fashion trend setters to help celebrate all their efforts in fighting HIV/AIDS and to help find a cure.
Now, even members of the eBay Community have an opportunity to assist in attaining this year's fund raising goal, which is to double the $1.7 million raised in 2005. By purchasing any of the donated merchandise listed on eBay with eBay Giving Works, which includes cashmere sweaters, shoes, handbags, books and fragrance bottles signed by designers, celebrity-worn red carpet gowns, and much more, you too can help contribute. Just be sure to type in "7th on Sale" in Search to have an impressive wide array of items returned for you until December 6, 2007, which is when 7th on Sale 2007 draws to a close.
When asked to comment on this unique event, eBay CEO and President and 7th on Sale 2007 Co-Chair Meg Whitman, answered, "7th on Sale is an important, collaborative fund raising effort among many accomplished members of the fashion industry. We're proud to once again work with the CFDA and Vogue to bring 7th on Sale to the eBay marketplace so that our global audience can support this very important cause."
And by the way, World AIDS Day takes place on Saturday, December 1st. Why not purchase an item listed for 7th on Sale 2007 as a excellent way to recognize and support those living with HIV/AIDS and to remember those that have already passed on from this disease? Simply type "7th on Sale" in Search.
Good luck, happy searching, and thanks for bidding!
After the devastating wildfires subsided in Southern California, many of us are left wondering what we can do to help out. From a long distance away or from right next door, many of us want to know how we can provide some help. Well, eBay Giving Works has launched a page dedicated to raising funds specifically for nonprofit organizations which aid the victims of the fires. This is a great way to raise funds while simply buying and selling on eBay.
From this page, you can buy items from sellers who designate 10%-100% of their sale proceeds will go to a nonprofit of their choice. If you're selling items, you may choose to designate a portion of your sales to benefit a nonprofit as well. Items sold with eBay Giving Works are displayed with the eBay Giving Works ribbon icon right in the listing. In the spirit of giving, eBay rewards the sellers' generosity by issuing a credit back for some insertion and final value fees, based on the donation percentage. Many great sellers have some wonderful items for sale, all of which will benefit a nonprofit organization in some way, so you can place a bid and lend a helping hand at the same time. Thank you to all of the buyers and sellers who have participated to date!
Check out Andy and Paul's My World page, where you can see their auctions, interests, and hobbies...even sign their guest book. They will be selling (on eBay, of course) various props from their travels, including a coin collection kit, a Collectible Wintini Martini set, and even autographed auctioneer headgear! (That's headgear of the hat and visor variety, not the orthodontic variety.) The best part is that each of these auctions is listed wtih eBay Giving Works, and 100% of the proceeds will benefit a non-profit organization. New items and props will be added every few days, so don't miss out on your chance to own a unique piece of Winnervators' history.
During the month of October, eBay Giving Works turned its spotlight on Breast Cancer Awareness and fundraising. In true eBay fashion, there are thousands of items up for sale, all with at least a portion of selling price going toward a breast cancer non-profit organization. With such a wide variety of items up for bid, you're bound to find something that captures your imagination...and benefits a good cause!
Now you may be asking yourself - what does a duck have to do with this? Well, Project Pink has teamed up with Munchkin again to offer celebrity-decorated pink rubber ducks up for auction, with proceeds to benefit Susan G. Komen Foundation for the cure. These adorable ducks serve as a reminder - "Don't Duck a Breast Exam." eBay President and CEO Meg Whitman decorated one of the pink ducks and added her personal autograph, so be sure to check out her duck auction which ended on October 29th. But Meg isn't the only celebrity to offer support - you can also bid on ducks decorated by Matthew McConaughey,Dear Abby, and NASCAR star Tony Stewart, among others. If you'd rather add your own bling, bid on your very own pink duck! Remember, 100% of the proceeds from the duck auctions will go to Susan G. Komen Foundation for the cure, so don't dawdle.
Some of the ducks themselves are here to give you their message -- check them out in this video. (Disclaimer -- the strings and shadows you see in this cheesy animation aren't imaginary, but should be!)
I'm here to warn you to be on the lookout for a traveling lab coat.
You know, those sterile, white jackets doctors or scientists wear in
their laboratory. But this ain't your ordinary lab coat. It's a very
special lab coat because it's "Traveling on for Charity" and listed through eBay's Giving Works tool.
Since I'm a native of Salt Lake City, I wanted to blog about this fantastic, grass roots, idea to raise money for the Primary Children's Medical Center, located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A big pat on the back should be given to eBay Community member danna who
started the lab coat on its adventures. She's even written about the
lab coat on her own blog. Please be sure to read her story, The Traveling eBay Lab Coat
to learn how her idea came to fruition. In a nutshell: Lab coats like
this one were worn only by a few eBay employees during eBay Live!
earlier this year. When the event ended, the employee who had worn this
lab coat listed it, donating the proceeds to charity. danna won
that auction, and then had a brilliant idea -- why not "pay it forward"
by listing the lab coat again, and donating the proceeds from the
second auction to her own favorite charity? Whoever won the second
auction could re-list it yet again for their own favorite charity, and keep "paying it forward."
And so the lab coat's travels began...
danna says, "the
goal is to keep the Lab Coat Traveling around eBay and for each owner
to sign it and re-list it back on eBay as a 100% Charity auction! A
company logo can be added, an autograph, a patch, pin... the ideas are
endless!"
We couldn't agree more, so we're going to try to keep track of the
traveling lab coat here on the Chatter Blog, and give you updates about
its progress and the money that it is raising for various charities.
Fast forwarding a few weeks after danna listed the lab coat, here we are again to discuss the latest version of the eBay Live! Traveling Lab Coat. The “pay it forward” torch has passed on to the winner of danna's auction, kompolt.
The
Kompolt team created a clever About Me page for the coat as it narrates
its short life span within the eBay Community. You can read more about
it here traveling_lab_coat.
For the non-profit organization that will benefit from this auction, kompolt has chosen the Challenged Athletes Foundation, in memory of the late Bob Hebeler, an eBay employee. Bob passed away suddenly last year and the Challenged Athletes Foundation
was set up as a way for those of us who knew him or others that want to
support this cause as a way to honor Bob and his love of outdoor sports
and athletics. 100% of the proceeds from the eBay Live! Traveling Lab Coat auction will go to supporting and encouraging challenged athletes to achieve their goals.
There
are still 7 days remaining so bid now, or maybe wait until the auction
is drawing to a close and try to win with your best sniping finger. Who
knows, maybe I'll be blogging about you and your favorite non-profit as
you join in on the fun of "paying it forward" with the eBay Live Traveling Lab Coat!
In a world where snarky, ironic t-shirts have become trendy fashion choices, the WWF (that's the World Wide Fund for Nature, not the pro wrestling circuit) is using them to its advantage. To raise awareness of its campaign against global climate change, the WWF has released a line of "Hotter Than I Should Be" shirts, replacing the "o" in "hotter" with a picture of a globe. They're very clever.
Now they've gone to the next logical step - having celebrities sign the shirts, and auctioning them off on eBay through
