We Finally Got One Wrong
Yes, I know the World Series ended over a week ago (even though St. Louis Cardinals fans are probably still celebrating). It's just that it's taken me this long to come to grips with the fact that our previously-foolproof system for predicting winners finally went awry. After successful predictions of Taylor Hicks' victory on American Idol and the Miami Heat winning last season's NBA title by using eBay sales trends, we thought we had a sure thing. The Tigers had crushed the Cardinals in items sold during the playoffs, and looked like mortal locks to take home the trophy. But Series MVP David Eckstein and the Cards got in the way.
Just out of curiosity, I did another quick check with eBay Marketplace Research on how both St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers items have been selling in our Sports Memorabilia categories since the Series. As you might expect, Cardinals items surged during World Series week, with over 6000 items moving (compared to fewer than 2000 just 3 weeks before). And they're still going strong with around 4500 items selling through yesterday. Unfortunately for Tiger fans, their run truly ended after their Game 5 loss. From Oct. 17-23 (a few days before the end of the Series), over 7000 Tigers items were sold. But in the following weeks, that's fallen to around 4000, and now around 2000.
So with this setback, I just have to look on the bright side.....2 out of 3 isn't so bad!
