Cobain Bests Elvis on Forbes List, but Not on eBay

Posted by Ryan on October 30, 2006 at 12:37 PM in eBay in Pop Culture , General | Permalink

Ryan_halloween Many of you may have seen the news from Forbes last week announcing that Kurt Cobain tops the list of deceased celebrity earners, beating out Elvis Presley $50M to $42M.  This got us to thinking about whether or not the same holds true on eBay.

Elvis_1 Much to my surprise, it wasn't even close.  Checking just the last two weeks, approximately 825 Cobain related items sold on the site.  Compare this to the almost EIGHTEEN THOUSAND Elvis items that sold during the same time period.  At first I thought that maybe Elvis listings were heavily padded with inexpensive items, but the average sale price for each artist came in around the mid $20s.  At least on eBay, Elvis is still truly the King.

Cobain Perhaps if Cobain were combined with other notables on the Forbes list, including Charles M. Schultz, John Lennon, and Andy Warhol, the reign of the King might be in jeopardy.
